Teaching Instructional Words Handbook

Most teachers feel confident in teaching classroom content and have many different strategies for teaching it. However often teachers find teaching the ‘literacy’ of their subject difficult, particularly explaining the instructional words of many assessment tasks and exams. This handbook breaks down 15 of the most common instructional words and provides a definition, sample exam questions and numerous approaches in how to teach the concept of the word within their content teaching. It also explains how to teach students how to respond to the term in the written form – highlighting to staff the necessity of not only teaching the concept, but the process of writing that is vital for success in most assessed tasks.


This resource can be used in any subject area and can be revised to include further words or subject specific examples.
